SS Rajamouli is back, and once again, he is changing the landscape of Indian cinema. After building the massive world of Baahubali and delivering the explosive global hit RRR, Rajamouli has now given fans a new universe to look forward to — Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu. The Globetrotter unveil has officially shown us the first look at this ambitious project, and it already feels like another step into a grand cinematic world.

Rajamouli has always pushed boundaries — from epic kingdoms, intense wars, mythic heroes, and emotional storytelling in Baahubali, to adrenaline-filled action and brotherhood in RRR. Now, with Varanasi, he dives into a new genre blend: mystical adventure, Indian mythology, and global-scale storytelling.

How Rajamouli’s Vision Reshaped Indian Cinema

Rajamouli is one of the few directors who builds worlds, not just films.
His movies introduced:

  • Large-scale world-building in Indian cinema

  • Grand visual storytelling and emotional depth

  • Characters inspired by mythology but designed for global audiences

  • Action and drama told in a universal language

From the kingdom of Mahishmati to the revolutionary era of RRR, his work transformed how Indian films are imagined, made, and celebrated worldwide.

With Varanasi, he seems ready to take it even further.

The Varanasi Globetrotter Unveil – Breakdown

The narrative spans multiple timelines, including 7000 BC, 512 CE, and 2027 CE, with locations ranging from the titular city of Varanasi to Africa and Antarctica. Rajamouli has mentioned that a significant sequence in the film is inspired by an important episode from the Ramayana.

Mahesh Babu appears in an intense, rugged avatar — different from anything we’ve seen before.

Alongside Mahesh, It also stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas (as Mandakini) and Prithviraj Sukumaran (as the antagonist Kumbha).

The film is one of India's most ambitious projects to date, with an estimated budget of over ₹1,000 crore (approximately $120 million USD), making it one of the most expensive Indian films ever. It is being filmed for a Premium Large-Scale Format and an IMAX release.

While the film itself is standalone, its ambitious, globe-trotting narrative that spans different timelines (including 7000 BC and 2027 CE) and incorporates elements of Hindu mythology (such as references to the Ramayana and Lord Hanuman) provides a rich foundation for a potential expanded universe or future projects if the filmmakers choose to explore them later.

Fans now eagerly wait for the full trailer — and to see how Rajamouli expands this mystical world.
